Women of Pandabpur nab liquor seller; Police step in

In a dramatic show of community action, women residents of Pandabpur in Madhupur police station area caught an alleged liquor trader red-handed late Friday night, ending weeks of frustration over rampant illegal alcohol sales.

The accused, identified as Uttam Das, was apprehended around 10 PM with a large stock of liquor. Local women, supported by youths, had been keeping vigil after repeated complaints of nuisance caused by drinkers in the Schooltilla locality. Once caught, Das was handed over to Amtali police, who seized the liquor and detained another customer found at the shop.

Residents say the problem has persisted despite earlier warnings. A community meeting had resolved that anyone selling liquor in the area would face fines and public shaming. Yet, locals allege at least a dozen sellers continue to operate, with Das described as the “mastermind.” His father too was reportedly involved in the trade years ago.

Friday’s action reflects growing public anger. Women’s groups in particular have led repeated anti-liquor drives, insisting that police take strict legal measures to ensure offenders face punishment and do not return to the trade.
