Khowai, Oct 04: In a significant development to the 2016 gangrape and murder of a tribal girl in Teliamura subdivision in Khowai Tripura district, 1 of the 7 accused in the case was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday and also awarded with 20 years of rigorous imprisonment under the POCSO Act.
Detaining the incident and its development, the Superintendent of Police of Khowai Tripura District Ramesh Kumar Yadav said that a case was registered with Teliamura police station on May 9, 2016, where at least 7 persons were accused of gangraping and killing of a minor tribal girl. IPS officer Lucky Chauhan was investigating the incident, he told reporters on Friday.
He further informed that out of 7 accused persons, two died, while three remained absconding and 1 juvenile. He said that the court on Thursday sentenced 1 of the 7 accused persons – Salpa Jamatia to life imprisonment and was also awarded with Rigorous Imprisonment for 20 years under the POCSO Act.
He further said that the development of the incident has come up due to the sincere and thorough investigation by the IPS officer Lucky Chouhan.
On the other hand, the SP on a different note said that at least 3 persons were apprehended on Thursday last in connection with two separate drug peddling cases registered with the Mungiakami and Khowai police station under the NDPS Act.
Detailing about the incidents, the SP informed the reporters that in the first incident registered with the Mungiakami police station, one stone-loaded tipper truck was intercepted and after thorough raid inside the truck in the Naka point on Thursday, led by SDPO and OC of Mungiakami police station at least 9975 numbers of bottles of Eskuf and Phensedyl were seized. Two persons were detained in connection with the case, he said.
He further informed that in a separate raid of one XUV car intercepted at Cherwa Naka point and after a thorough check, around 47.5 kg Ganjas were seized from a secret chamber of the vehicle. A specific case was registered with the Khowai police station and 1 person was apprehended in connection with the case, he told reporters.
Police is further investigating the cases to unearth the backward and forward linkages of the accused persons, he said, adding that the Eskuf and Phensedyl bottles were being transported from Mizoram through the tripper truck.
