New Delhi, Feb 23: Former Delhi chief minister Atishi was chosen as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly at a meeting of the Aam Aadmi Party MLAs here on Sunday.
With this, the AAP MLA from Kalkaji constituency becomes the first woman to hold the post.
The first session of the Delhi Assembly will commence on February 24. It will have three sittings.
AAP's Delhi unit convenor Gopal Rai told mediapersons that Atishi was chosen by consensus at a meeting of the party's 22 MLAs in the presence of AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal.
Rai, who is MLA from Babarpur, said that her name was proposed by Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha and unanimously supported by all other newly elected legislators.
Speaking at the press conference, Atishi thanked the party chief Kejriwal and all the MLAs for choosing her for the post and promised to raise all key issues with full force.
Later, Kejriwal said in a post on X: "I congratulate Atishi ji for being elected as Leader of AAP in the House. AAP will play the role of constructive opposition in the interest of the people of Delhi."
On her part, Atishi too posted on X: "The people of Delhi have entrusted us with the role of opposition, and as a strong opposition we will ensure that the BJP government fulfils all its promises made to the people of Delhi."
The BJP ousted AAP from power in Delhi, winning 48 of the 70 seats in the assembly polls held on February 5. Kejriwal, former deputy CM Manish Sisodia and several top leaders of the party bit the dust.
