Sonamura, Mar 04. A couple that arrived with a cart full of eco-friendly brooms made of Arjun flowers and its grass generally grown in the hilly slopes of Tripura became the centre of attraction at weekly Kathalia market on Tuesday.
They grabbed the attention because of the heavy discount they were offering on the prices. Generally sold at a fixed price of Rs 50 to 60 per piece, the tardy brooms were available at a price of Rs 25 per price. The price point drew a massive deal of buyers.
Weekly markets are special in the sense that people from distant areas, especially places that are less connected with the mainstream, come to purchase essentials on that particular day. And, heavy discounts are always lucrative.
The couple Swami Matam Reangband his wife Matufa Reang traveled all the way from Bir Chandra Manu, in South Tripura district.
When asked, one of them said that making these beautiful pieces of brooms is their primary occupation. “We collect the raw materials from the forest. Sometimes we buy the raw materials from other villagers and spend days giving them the final shape. Once the brooms are ready, they go to the weekly markets for trading,” said Swami Matam Reang.
Some local traders approached them to procure the whole lot in bulk, but they politely refused. Reang revealed that his only motive was to make their products accessible to all. He also said that cheap plastic made brooms are gradually replacing the eco-friendly product.
“Our products are completely eco-friendly but plastic is a big threat. We need to promote our traditional goods to keep the environment clean,” Reang added.
Within a very short period of time, their entire stock was emptied.
