Families facing eviction demand rehabilitation under Howrah river front project

Agartala, Mar 18: Nineteen families, who have been residing along the Howrah river bank from Joypur RCC Bridge to the IBB fencing for the past 30-35 years, are now facing eviction under the Howrah Riverfront Development Project.
The state government has issued a seven-day notice, asking them to vacate the area to clear encroachments.
The affected families met the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) on Monday and urged the administration to provide rehabilitation before eviction.
Many residents expressed concerns about losing their homes without alternative arrangements.
Interacting with the media, a member of Shramik Sangathan and a resident of 7-Ramnagar stated that most affected families earn their livelihood through daily wage work. While some are rickshaw-pullers and laborers, others work in households to sustain their families.
The affected families, along with him, met Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder to seek a resolution. The Mayor assured them that he would look into the matter and advised them to meet the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) to formally communicate their grievances.
According, members of the affected families visited the SDM office and urged the administration to provide rehabilitation before eviction.
