Kailashahar, Nov 7: In order to press for long pending demands, students of Ramkrishna college in Kailashahar, along with ABVP student leaders, closed the college and blocked the main road outside the campus on Thursday.
The agitating protestors highlighted that the lack of a large auditorium and open stage for hosting events, which has been a struggle for students and college authorities during any celebration or function.
Besides, they emphasized the shortage of teachers, which is affecting academic activities.
Despite repeated appeals to the concerned officials over the years, no actions have been taken to address these issues, the added.
During the college’s 75th anniversary celebration in September, students and ABVP representatives had directly discussed these demands with Chief Minister Manik Saha, but no progress has been made over a month later.
Irked over the situation, the students, led by ABVP’s Kailashahar town secretary Abhishek Ghosh, Unakoti district coordinator Ayush Deb and student leaders Dipanjan Bhattacharya, Suman Malakar, Sneha Sutradhar and Moumita Das, closed all offices and suspended classes on Thursday.
Besides, the agitators locked the college gates and staged a road blockade in front of the college.
The protestors warned that the agitation would continue until their demands are met.
They even threatened to extend the blockade to Kailashahar’s main road on November 8 if no resolution is reached.
However, Police and TSR forces were present on the spot.
With no assurances by 5 pm, the demonstrators withdrew the blockade for the day but reiterated their intent to lock the college and block the main road from November 8 if necessary.
