Gandachhera May 20: In spite of several years of independence, the Surjokant hamlet of Ranipukur in Gandachhara continues to be untouched by progress and development. Villagers are still compelled to cross the rivulets using bamboo poles.
Once home to approximately 50 families, the Ranipukur Village near the Dambur reservoir is riddled with numerous challenges, including communication issues, leading many residents to relocate to other areas. Presently, there are only 31 families remaining in the village, with the majority relying on fishing in the Dambur reservoir to sustain their livelihoods.
Despite persistent appeals over the years, the hamlet is yet to see the construction of a paved bridge, leaving its inhabitants feeling neglected.
“The 40-year-old village remains deprived of progress for reasons unknown. We made repeated written requests to the local panchayat, block, public works department, and even the sub-divisional Magistrate's office, emphasizing the urgent need for a bridge, but the pleas appear to be fallen on deaf ears”, alleged the villagers.
The absence of bridges in the area has severely impacted the daily lives of the villagers, posing risks to school students, teachers, patients, children, and elderly people. The situation becomes worse during the monsoon season as the water level rises in the rivulet.
“Frustration and anger have permeated the village, as we feel ignored and forgotten by those in power”, an elderly woman said.
