Agartala, Aug 29: Along with major necessities like food, clothes, house and education, sports is also considered to be a vital sector today, said Minister Tinku Roy as he inaugurated the National Sports Day celebrations on Tuesday.
The celebrations started with a rally from the front of Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan organized under the initiative of Youth Affairs and Sports Department, Tripura.
Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Tinky Roy, Director Satyabrata Nath, Gymnast Dipa Karmakar among others led the rally from the front that ended at Umakanta Swimming Pool premises.
Addressing the prime state event at Umakanta Swimming Pool premises, Minister Tinku Roy said, “Every year, August 29 is observed as National Sports Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of legend Major Dhyan Chand Singh. The first National Sports Day was celebrated on August 29, 2012 and therefore this year marks the 12th anniversary of Rashtriya Khel Diwas”.
Detailing the contributions of Major Dhyan Chand Singh in the Sports arena, the minister said, “The celebration serves as a catalyst for the remarkable development of a robust sports culture across the nation. Like basic necessities of food, clothes, house and education, sports has also turned out to be a much important sector that is essential for a disease-free healthy lifestyle”.
“Under the leadership of prime minister Narendra Modi, Sports and sportsmen are now given equal importance and respect that they deserve”, he added.
The minister further said that sports and engagement with sports of various kinds will also contribute to the building of ‘Drug-Free Tripura’.
“Youths must be encouraged to be associated with different sorts of sports and recreational activities. This in turn will refrain them from getting addicted to drugs and the goal of a drug-free state can be achieved”, he said.
The minister for youth affairs and sports, Tinku Roy also promised to extend all necessary assistance to the talented youths of the state in achieving their goals in the respective fields of sports.
