In a significant advancement for medical education in Tripura, the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has substantially expanded its postgraduate training capacity for the 2026-27 academic session, creating new opportunities for aspiring doctors and strengthening the state's specialist healthcare workforce.
Announcing the development, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha said the number of postgraduate MD and MS seats at AGMC has increased from 95 to 153, enabling more medical graduates from Tripura and beyond to pursue specialised training within the state.
The expansion covers 16 specialised disciplines and is expected to enhance the availability of advanced medical education while addressing the growing demand for specialist doctors in various branches of healthcare. The increase in seats marks one of the most significant capacity additions in the institution's recent history.
Describing the development as a major milestone, the Chief Minister said the enhanced intake capacity would open new academic and professional avenues for young medical aspirants while simultaneously strengthening the state's healthcare delivery system. According to him, the growth of postgraduate education is essential for producing skilled specialists who can serve in hospitals, medical colleges and healthcare institutions across Tripura.
The expansion is also expected to reduce the need for many students to leave the state for higher medical studies, allowing them to access specialised education closer to home. Medical education experts believe that increased postgraduate seats can significantly contribute to the development of a stronger pool of trained professionals in fields where specialist services are often in high demand.
Dr. Saha attributed the achievement to continued support from the Central Government and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for their assistance in strengthening Tripura's medical education and healthcare infrastructure.
He emphasised that sustained investment in medical education is crucial for the long-term development of the healthcare sector. According to the Chief Minister, creating more opportunities for postgraduate training today will help build a stronger and more resilient healthcare system for the future.
The expansion of MD and MS seats is expected to benefit not only medical students but also patients, as a larger number of specialists trained within the state could eventually improve the availability of advanced healthcare services in government hospitals and medical institutions.
With AGMC continuing to expand its academic capacity, the latest development is being viewed as an important step towards transforming Tripura into a stronger centre for medical education and specialist healthcare in the Northeast, reinforcing the state's broader efforts to improve both educational opportunities and public health outcomes.
