Assam Rifles, DRI seize codeine-based cough syrup worth Rs 1.27 crore at Agartala railway station

Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), seized 55,626 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup worth around Rs 1.27 crore from Agartala Railway Station in Tripura, officials said on Thursday.

The seizure was made following specific intelligence inputs about the movement of a consignment of contraband through the railway network, they said.

During the operation, the joint team intercepted the suspected consignment and carried out a detailed search, leading to the recovery of the codeine-based cough syrup, which was allegedly being transported illegally, the officials said.

The seized contraband has been handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Agartala, for further investigation and legal proceedings, they said.

Officials said the operation was carried out jointly by Assam Rifles and the DRI as part of efforts to curb the illegal movement of narcotic and psychotropic substances in the region.

No further details, including whether any arrests were made in connection with the seizure, were immediately available.

The investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the consignment and identify those involved in the alleged smuggling network, officials added.
