'Every year Rath comes, but they will not’: Families of Kumarghat Ulta Rath victims speak of irreplaceable loss

Three years after the horrific Kumarghat “Ulta Rath” tragedy, the families of victims continue to live with grief and irreversible loss. For many, the annual Rath Yatra now serves as a painful reminder of loved ones who will never return.

Khukhu Rani Ghosh, who lost her daughter‑in‑law Ruma Sarkar and granddaughter Priyanka Ghosh in the incident, still struggles to reconcile with the void left behind. Another granddaughter, Diya Ghosh, survived but suffered severe burn injuries and lost both her hands.

“Every year, Rath comes but the people will not come back again,” she told Tripura Times, her words echoing the enduring sorrow of families across Unakoti district.

While compensation was provided by the government, Ghosh reflected that no financial support could ever truly cover the depth of the loss. “We received compensation but will it cover the loss we actually had?” she asked, urging authorities to ensure that such tragedies never repeat. “Enjoyment should be done maintaining all the protocols and safety,” she added.

The tragedy unfolded on June 28, 2023, when the ceremonial chariot of Lord Jagannath during the Ulta Rath Yatra at Uttar Pabiacherra, Kumarghat, came into contact with a 133 kV overhead wire. The resulting fire claimed at least seven lives, including children and women, and left more than 15 devotees injured.

In the immediate aftermath, Chief Minister Manik Saha rushed to the site, announced compensation packages, and ordered an inquiry. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended condolences and financial assistance.

The state government later introduced strict safety regulations, capping chariot heights at five metres, mandating non‑conductive materials, and deploying emergency services at major processions.

Yet, for families like the Ghoshs, the pain remains raw. Their story underscores that beyond policy changes and safety measures, the human cost of the Kumarghat Ulta Rath tragedy continues to weigh heavily on Tripura’s collective memory.
