Father's Kidney plea underscores Rs 10 Crore gap in life-saving treatment for AMA-hit Manashree

A desperate cry for help has shaken the state as Dhruba Chowdhury, father of 22‑month‑old Manashree, battling Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), publicly sought information about hospitals performing kidney transplants.

His emotional appeal, posted on Facebook, has sparked speculation that he may be considering selling a kidney to raise funds for his daughter’s treatment, highlighting the family’s dire struggle to bridge a Rs 10 crore shortfall.

Manashree requires the one‑time gene therapy injection Zolgensma, which costs nearly Rs 16 crore and is most effective when administered before the age of two. With her second birthday only days away, the urgency has reached a critical point.

For months, the family has relied on crowdfunding campaigns across Tripura and beyond. So far, around Rs 6 crore has been raised. Bollywood actor Sonu Sood was approached for assistance, while social activist Hussain Mansuri personally visited the family and contributed Rs 5 lakh. A group of young volunteers, led by Banamalipur‑based activist Raja Saha, continues to work tirelessly to mobilize donations.

Despite these efforts, the enormous gap remains. Chowdhury’s Facebook post on Wednesday captured the family’s desperation, with many interpreting it as a willingness to sacrifice his own health to save his child. Though he did not clarify whether he intended to donate or sell a kidney, the appeal underscored the crushing financial burden faced by a middle‑class household in such circumstances.

The case has reignited debate over healthcare affordability and government responsibility. Campaigners argue that access to life‑saving therapies should not depend solely on a family’s ability to raise millions through crowdfunding. They stress that catastrophic medical expenses demand stronger state intervention and systemic support.

For now, the Chowdhury family continues to appeal for urgent assistance, insisting that every contribution matters. As the deadline approaches, Tripura watches anxiously, hoping collective compassion and support can bridge the gap and give Manashree a chance at survival.
