Somnath Temple‑inspired Durga Puja Mandap under construction in Srimantapur; Minister Tinku Roy reviews preparations

This year’s Durga Puja in Srimantapur, Chandipur constituency, Unakoti district is set to captivate visitors with a spectacular mandap designed in the likeness of the historic Somnath Temple. Organised by the Srimantapur Sanghati Sarbojanin Durga Puja Committee, the project carries a budget of nearly Rs 70 lakh, making it one of the most ambitious festive attractions in the region.

Construction has been underway for over a month under the supervision of skilled artisans brought in from West Bengal. While space constraints prevent a full replication of the temple’s vast architecture, organisers say the design will capture the essence and spiritual grandeur of Somnath, blending artistry with devotion.

On Thursday morning, Social Education and Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy, MLA from Chandipur, visited the site to review preparations. He interacted with organisers and craftsmen, inspecting progress and discussing arrangements for the festival.

Roy expressed confidence that, as in previous years, the mandap will be inaugurated on Shashthi by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. He added that the five‑day celebration will feature midday meals, prasad distribution, cultural programmes, elaborate lighting, and the release of a Puja magazine, ensuring a vibrant experience for devotees and visitors alike.

The minister noted that the Srimantapur Puja has consistently drawn large crowds and predicted that this year’s temple‑themed mandap will be a major attraction. Local residents echoed his optimism, saying the initiative reflects both cultural pride and community spirit.
