A local unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lodged a police complaint in Tripura’s Baikhora alleging defamatory social media posts against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, police officials said on Friday.
According to the complaint filed at Baikhora police station by members of the BJP’s Jolaibari Mandal unit, a resident of the area and a retired school teacher, identified as Sukumar Das, has been allegedly circulating content critical of the party and sharing posts on social media that the complainants claim are defamatory towards the Prime Minister.
The written complaint was submitted by the Mandal president of the BJP Yuva Morcha, Keshab Chowdhury, along with other party workers. Speaking to reporters after filing the complaint, Chowdhury alleged that the accused had been “regularly engaging in propaganda” against the party and had recently shared posts targeting the Prime Minister.
“We have urged the police to conduct a fair investigation into the matter and take appropriate legal action against the individual concerned,” Chowdhury said.
Police officials confirmed that a complaint was registered and said a preliminary inquiry has been initiated. “We have received a written complaint and are examining the allegations. Necessary action will be taken as per law after verification,” a police officer from Baikhora police station said, declining to be named.
