Over 80 percent of the total Panchayats in Tripura have secured ‘Grade A’ status in the Panchayat Advancement Index 2.0 released recently by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. Out of 1176 total Panchayat 943 have been categorised with the ‘Grade A’ status.
The development is being seen as a major achievement of the Panchayats as in the previous edition of the PAI (Panchayat Advancement Index) only 42 Panchayats could secure such top gradation.
Besides, Tripura has also reported full onboarding of all 1,176 Gram Panchayats and Traditional Local Bodies (GPs/TLBs) under the Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI) framework.
The data shows that out of the total 1,176 GPs/TLBs across eight districts and 58 blocks, as many as 943 have been graded ‘A’, while the remaining 233 fall in lower categories.
According to the officials, the grading reflects performance across multiple governance and development indicators.
Jugal Kishorenagar Gram Panchayat under Jampuijala block in Sepahijala district emerged as the best-performing local body in the state, securing Grade ‘A’ with a PAI score of 88.44.
The thematic distribution of grades indicates varying performance across sectors. In Theme 1, 867 GPs/TLBs secured ‘A’ grade, while 221 fell in lower brackets. Theme 2 recorded 1,111 ‘A’ graded bodies, with 62 in other categories. Theme 3 saw a more mixed outcome, with 417 in the top grade and 507 in mid-level categories. Themes related to infrastructure, social security, and governance also reflected disparities, with some themes showing over 1,000 top performers while others had significant numbers in lower grades.
Under the theme-wise best performers’ category, several Gram Panchayats were identified for their performance across key sectors. Shibnagar GP in Nalchar block of Sepahijala district led in poverty-free and enhanced livelihoods. Amtali GP in Amarpur block of Gomati district topped in healthy panchayat indicators. Chandinagar GP in Kumarghat block of Unakoti district was recognised under child-friendly panchayat.
North Dhanicherra GP in Fatikroy block of Unakoti district featured under water-sufficient panchayat, while West Takcherra GP in Jampuijala block of Sepahijala district was noted for clean and green initiatives. Paschim Jatan GP in Amarpur block of Gomati district led in self-sufficient infrastructure.
Thakchara GP in Amarpur block of Gomati district was identified under governance indicators, while Balarampara GP in Hezamara block of West Tripura district was recognised for women-friendly initiatives.
This assessment aims to benchmark grassroots governance and identify gaps across thematic areas.
