Heavy Rain ravages farmers' fields in Barkathal; MoS Brishaketu Debbarma voices concern

Torrential rains accompanied by a nor’wester have devastated farmland in Barkathal under Simna constituency, washing away nearly seven kani of paddy fields and leaving local farmers in despair. What was once fertile land has now been reduced to a waterlogged stretch resembling a river, threatening the livelihood of dozens of cultivators.

On Thursday, Minister of State for Industries and Commerce Brishaketu Debbarma, who also represents the constituency, visited the affected area along with officials from the Water Resources Department and local farmers. Speaking to the media after the inspection, Debbarma confirmed the scale of damage and expressed concern about the challenges ahead.

“Excessive rainfall has destroyed close to seven kani of farmland. Discussions are underway with the department to ensure proper drainage and water flow. But there is uncertainty about what the coming monsoon might bring,” the MoS said.

Farmers in Barkathal, already struggling with rising costs and unpredictable weather, now face the grim prospect of reduced yields and financial hardship.

Meanwhile, local residents have urged the administration to provide immediate relief and compensation, warning that without timely intervention, the damage could deepen during the upcoming rainy season.
