
The District and Sessions Court, Dhalai on Tuesday sentenced a drug peddler to Rigorous Imprisonment for 20 years and also slapped a fine of Rs. 1 lakh under NDPS Act.
The convict- Supankar Debnath (35) is a resident of Dhanpur under Sepahijala district.
On August 10, 2024, based on secret information, Ambassa police intercepted a Bolero vehicle suspected of carrying narcotics. The driver attempted to flee and met with an accident during police chase near Chamalcherra. The driver- Supankar Debnath was detained while two others managed to escape.Â
In presence of Executive Magistrate and independent witnesses, search of the vehicle led to recovery of 587.52 grams of brown sugar concealed in 49 soap cases and 80,000 Yaba tablets from a secret chamber.
After thorough investigation, Sub-Inspector Joy Thapa of Ambassa police station submitted charge-sheet against the accused person on December 31, 2024.Â
After the trial, the District and Sessions Judge, Dhalai found the accused person guilty and sentenced him accordingly.
According to the court order, in default of payment of fine, the convict shall suffer Rigorous Imprisonment for one year for commission of offence punishable u/s 21(c)/22(c)/25 of NDPS Act.Â
He was also sentenced and fined for commission of offence punishable u/s 324(1), 281 of BNS.
