CBI arrests proclaimed offender in over Rs 7.75 cr Tripura chit fund scam

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a proclaimed offender, Sanjit Chakraborty, from Kolkata on Tuesday in connection with major chit-fund scams in Tripura .

According to an official press release, the accused has been charge-sheeted in two Tripura chit fund cases.

The accused, CMD of M/s Cosmic Negociators Pvt. Ltd., Kolkata was at large since registration of FIR by Tripura Police in 2013. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the cases in 2013/2023 after notifications of Tripura Government and Central Government under DSPE Act, 1946.

After investigation, charge-sheet in the first case was filed against the accused Sanjit Chakraborty and others in 2015 for duping public money to the tune of approximately Rs. 7.48 crore.

Charge-sheet in the second case was filed in 2024 against the accused Sanjit Chakraborty and others for duping public money to the tune of Rs. 27.13 lakhs. In both the cases, he was shown as absconding accused in the charge-sheet.

The accused was hiding and evading arrest since 2013. After sustained efforts, based on inputs collected during field verification/ technical and physical surveillance/CDR analysis/ OSINT, the accused- Sanjit Chakraborty was zeroed in Kolkata, West Bengal and was arrested by the CBI on Tuesday.

The arrested accused will be brought to Tripura for production before the Competent Court after securing transit warrant from the jurisdictional court at Kolkata. Further investigation is underway.
