Minister Bikash Debbarma stresses tribal education at EMRS launch by Speaker Rampada Jamatia

A landmark step in expanding educational opportunities for tribal children was marked in Gomati district on Thursday with the inauguration of a 480-seat Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) at Killa. 

The new institution was formally opened by Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly Rampada Jamatia, with Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma attending as chief guest.

The ceremony began with the unveiling of the school plaque by Speaker Jamatia, followed by a lamp-lighting ritual that set the tone for the event. The programme drew a large gathering of district officials, elected representatives, teachers, students, parents, and local residents, all eager to witness the launch of what many described as a milestone for the region.

In his address, Minister Debbarma underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring that children from economically weaker tribal families are not deprived of education due to financial hardship. 

He highlighted initiatives taken under Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha’s leadership to strengthen educational infrastructure in tribal areas, alongside central schemes introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Education is the foundation of progress. Without it, no community can achieve holistic development. Tribal boys and girls, once educated, will play a vital role in shaping the future of society and the state,” Debbarma said.

Speaker Jamatia echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of residential schools in remote regions. He noted that EMRS institutions provide not only quality education but also a supportive environment for tribal students to pursue higher studies. He expressed hope that the new school would help bridge educational gaps and empower tribal families.

The EMRS model is designed to deliver quality education and residential facilities to tribal children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Officials believe the new school will smoothen the path to higher education for many families who previously struggled to access such opportunities.

The inauguration concluded with a symbolic tree plantation drive, where ten invited guests participated, reinforcing the twin messages of education and environmental responsibility.
