Tripura Capital steps toward sustainable transport with 10 Electric Bus roll out

In a major push toward eco-friendly urban mobility, Agartala is set to introduce 10 electric buses ahead of the upcoming Puja festivities, marking the city’s first organised step into sustainable public transport.

Announcing the initiative at a press conference, Urban Development Department Secretary Dr. Milind Ramteke said the project is being implemented under the Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded ‘Roads and Mobility’ programme. The tendering process has already begun and bids will be opened on August 21.

Under the first phase, ten nine-metre-long buses will be procured along with charging infrastructure. The fleet will operate mainly within Agartala and its adjoining areas, covering a radius of 10–12 kilometres. 

Dr. Ramteke explained that the limited fleet size is a cautious start, designed to avoid disruption to existing transport services, with expansion planned depending on the success of the rollout.

He acknowledged that Agartala currently lacks an organised public transport network and adequate electric vehicle infrastructure. The new service, he said, will not only improve urban mobility but also reduce pollution and promote greener commuting options. 

Efficient management by the Agartala Municipal Corporation and Agartala Smart City Limited will be key to ensuring the project’s success.

The initiative reflects the state government’s vision of integrating sustainable transport solutions with ongoing urban road and infrastructure development. If successful, the pilot fleet could pave the way for a larger rollout, positioning Agartala as a regional model for green mobility and eco-friendly transport.
