Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday participated in the state-level programme of Somnath Swabhiman Parv held in Agartala to commemorate 75 years of the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple following historical invasions.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reminding the nation of its Sanatani values and historical heritage through such initiatives.Â
He stated that greater participation of the youth in these programmes would help them learn more about their cultural roots and traditions.
Dr. Saha said the phrase Somnath Swabhiman embodies national consciousness and self-respect.Â
He emphasized that people should not forget their civilization, culture, language, and heritage, and called for greater awareness among the younger generation about their roots.
Describing Somnath as a symbol of India’s indomitable civilization, the Chief Minister said the temple stands as an example of self-respect, courage, and spiritual consciousness despite repeated destructive attacks.
He noted that the modern reconstruction of the Somnath Temple became possible 75 years ago due to the firm resolve of “Iron Man” Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he added, the sacred site today reflects India’s ongoing cultural renaissance.
The state-level programme of Somnath Swabhiman Parv was organized at the Shivbari premises on Central Road in Agartala, highlighting cultural heritage and pride.
Speaking on the historical background, Dr. Saha said the temple was first attacked in 1026 by Mahmud of Ghazni and was subsequently destroyed and rebuilt several times. He said the invaders’ objective had been destruction, but Somnath continued to endure as a symbol of resilience.
The Chief Minister further said that 75 years have now been completed since the reconstruction and inauguration of the temple in independent India, nearly 1,000 years after the first attack.
He said that inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the year-long Somnath Swabhiman Parv is observed across the country from January 11, 2026 and it will continue till January 11, 2027. The Agartala event was also a part of this initiative.
