Tripura records sharp rise in Fish Production: Sudhangshu

The State has registered a notable surge in fish production, rising from 85,000 metric tons in 2024–25 to a provisional 95,144.50 metric tons in 2025–26, marking a significant step towards self-reliance in the fisheries sector.

Announcing the figures on Friday at a state-level review meeting of the Fisheries Department held at the Directorate’s conference hall in Gurkhabasti, Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das credited the growth to the effective rollout of government schemes such as the Mukhyamantri Matsya Bikash Yojana and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.

The meeting, attended by officials from the sub-divisional to the state level, focused on evaluating achievements, budget utilization, and the pace of ongoing projects during the 2025–26 financial year. Minister Das stressed that timely delivery of schemes and accountability among officials are essential to ensure benefits reach citizens.

He further highlighted that discussions also centered on strategies for the upcoming 2026–27 financial year, with a strong emphasis on making Tripura self-sufficient in fisheries. “We must examine whether responsibilities are being carried out sincerely and how the state can achieve self-reliance in fish farming,” Das remarked.

The review concluded with a call for improved monitoring, stronger grassroots implementation, and innovative approaches to sustain the upward trend in production, reinforcing fisheries as a vital contributor to livelihoods and food security in Tripura.
