In a landmark austerity initiative, the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) has announced a new work schedule for its employees, combining physical office attendance with work-from-home arrangements. The move, aimed at reducing government expenditure and conserving fuel, will come into effect from May 16, 2026 (Saturday).
Â
According to an official memorandum issued by Raval Hemendra Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, TTAADC, employees will now attend office physically on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, while duties on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday will be carried out from home. The order will remain in force until further notification.
Â
The memorandum stated that the decision was taken in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal urging citizens and institutions to conserve fuel and adopt work-from-home practices wherever feasible. Rising energy, petrol, and diesel prices were cited as key reasons for introducing expenditure-cutting measures within the administration.
Â
According to the new arrangement, employees working from home must remain available via telephone and electronic communication for official duties and urgent matters. The order also makes it clear that no employee will be allowed to leave station without prior permission or intimation to the competent authority.
Â
Further, as part of its conservation strategy, the Council has also decided to hire and use the maximum possible number of electric vehicles for transportation purposes in cases of necessity.
Â
However, the memorandum clarified that these instructions will not apply to offices and employees engaged in essential and emergency services, ensuring that critical functions remain unaffected.
Â
Earlier, the Tripura government has implemented immediate austerity measures, including mandating that 50% of Group C and D employees work from home on a rotational basis to conserve fuel and cut expenditure. These measures, initiated by the General Administration Department following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal, apply to state departments, PSUs, and autonomous bodies, with exceptions for essential services.
Â
Also, several Ministers including the chief minister have already set examples by giving up escort vehicles, reducing convoys and opting for bicycles, e-rickshaws etc.
Â
Observers say the TTAADC’s hybrid work model not only reflects fiscal prudence but also signals a shift towards sustainable governance, where small administrative changes contribute to larger national goals of conservation and responsible resource management.
