Jahar Chakraborti sworn in as Dharmanagar MLA; BJP strengthens Assembly hold

Newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Jahar Chakraborty was sworn in on Wednesday as the MLA from Dharmanagar, in a ceremony held at the Tripura Legislative Assembly lobby. The oath was administered by Speaker Rampada Jamatia in the presence of a packed gathering of political leaders and dignitaries.

Chakraborty’s victory in the April 9 by-election was historic, as he defeated CPI(M) candidate Amitabha Datta by a record margin. The by-election was necessitated by the passing of former Speaker and MLA Biswa Bandhu Sen. With this win, the BJP has further consolidated its strength in the 60-member House, raising its tally to 33 seats.

The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy, ministers, MLAs, and members of the opposition CPI(M) and Congress, reflecting the significance of the occasion.

In his remarks, Chakraborty pledged to prioritize the development of Dharmanagar constituency and assured that maintaining law and order would remain a cornerstone of his tenure.

The event not only marked the formal induction of a new representative but also symbolized a moment of political consolidation for the ruling BJP, strengthening its legislative presence in Tripura.
