Dr Debabrata Das from Assam appointed new VC for Tripura University

The Centre has appointed Dr Debabrata Das, currently serving as Adviser in the Higher Education Department of the Assam government, as the new Vice Chancellor of Tripura University, an official communication said. 

In a letter dated July 2, the Ministry of Education informed the Registrar of Tripura University that the President of India, in her capacity as the Visitor of the central university, had approved Das's appointment.

The appointment will be for a term of five years from the date he assumes office or until he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier, the communication said.

The ministry said the terms and conditions of Das's service as Vice Chancellor would be governed by the provisions of the Tripura University Act, Statutes and Ordinances.

A copy of the communication was also marked to Das, the Principal Secretary of the Higher Education Department of the Assam government, the Registrar of Tezpur University, the University Grants Commission, the Association of Indian Universities and other concerned authorities.

The post of Vice Chancellor at Tripura University had been awaiting a regular appointment after former VC Dr Ganga Prasad Prasain vacated his office in August 2025. 

In the intervening period, professor Shyamal Das was appointed the acting Vice Chancellor of Tripura University.
