Tripura records sharp decline in Infant Mortality Rate as per SRS Report: CM

Tripura has registered a significant decline in the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) as per the SRS Report 2024, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said on Thursday.

Sharing the achievement through a social media post, the Chief Minister said the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) Bulletin 2024, released by the Registrar General of India in May 2026, placed Tripura’s IMR at 12, considerably lower than the national average of 24.

According to the data highlighted by the Chief Minister, Tripura has shown a steady improvement over the past three years.

The state's IMR declined from 17 in 2022 to 15 in 2023, before dropping further to 12 in 2024. During the same period, the national IMR stood at 26 in 2022, 25 in 2023, and 24 in 2024.

The Chief Minister attributed the improvement to sustained efforts in strengthening maternal and child healthcare services across the state.

He said enhanced institutional deliveries, expansion and strengthening of Special Newborn Care Units (SNCU) and Newborn Stabilisation Units (NBSU), improved immunisation coverage, and community-level health interventions played a key role in achieving the milestone.

Saha described the development as a major success in Tripura’s healthcare sector and said the state government remains committed to further improving public health services, particularly for mothers and children.

He also acknowledged the support of the Central government in advancing healthcare initiatives in the state and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister JP Nadda for their assistance in strengthening Tripura’s health infrastructure and services.

Health officials view the reduction in IMR as an important indicator of improved healthcare delivery and better neonatal and maternal care in the state.
