In a major medical achievement, doctors at the Cardiology Department of Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital have successfully performed the state’s first-ever complex Uterine Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) embolization procedure.
The patient, a 38-year-old woman from Demcherra in Dhalai district, was admitted to the GBP Hospital with severe abdominal pain and excessive vaginal bleeding.
Considering the seriousness of her condition, senior gynecology specialist Prof. Dr. J. L. Baidya initiated immediate treatment in coordination with the Radiology and Cardiology departments. The multidisciplinary approach helped in rapid diagnosis and timely intervention, leading to the patient’s recovery.
Doctors carried out the highly complex endovascular procedure by placing multiple coils in the right uterine artery and additional feeder vessels supplying blood to the uterine AVM. The minimally invasive catheter-based treatment was successfully performed on May 15 without any open surgery.
The nearly three-hour-long procedure was led by interventional cardiologist and Head of the Cardiology Department, Dr. Anindya Sundar Trivedi. He was assisted by cardiologists Dr. Rakesh Das and Dr. Manna Bhattacharya.
The patient received the life-saving treatment completely free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Medical Superintendent Dr. Bidhan Goswami and RMO Dr. Bikash Debbarma reportedly took special initiatives to arrange the rare coil implants required for the procedure.
The anaesthesia team included consultant cardiac anaesthetist Dr. Rimjhim Chakma and consultant anaesthetist Dr. Monimoy Debbarma. Other members of the cardiology team included Dr. Samrat Das, Dr. Aristotle Tripura, Dr. Khamili Debbarma and Dr. Debashis Reang.
Echo technician Kishan Roy and Cath Lab staff including Debabrata Debnath, Pranakrishna Deb, Manas Dutta, Titiksha Majumdar, technician Sanjay Ghosh and Arijit Pal also played key roles in the successful completion of the procedure.
