Anti-Drug Street Play stir public response across Tripura's Khowai District

A district-wide campaign against substance abuse has struck a powerful chord with residents of Khowai district, where a series of street plays and awareness meetings have been staged under the banner “Say No to Drugs, Yes to Life.”

Organised by the Voluntary Health Association of Tripura with support from the District Social Welfare and Social Education Department, the initiative formed part of the Nasha Mukti Week programme. 

Performances were held across six blocks, as well as in Khowai and Teliamura municipal areas, targeting busy marketplaces, weekly haats, road junctions, and educational institutions.

The plays vividly depicted the destructive consequences of drug addiction—broken families, social collapse, and the loss of youthful potential—while urging audiences to embrace healthier, more hopeful lives. Each performance left spectators deeply moved, with many pledging to join the fight against narcotics.

Crowds gathered spontaneously, ranging from daily commuters and traders to women, youth, and elderly residents. Organisers reported that several attendees took an anti-drug oath during the events, signalling strong community support for the campaign.

According to the organisers, enforcement alone cannot defeat the drug menace. “Cultural interventions like street theatre reach directly into the hearts of people. Awareness is the strongest weapon against addiction,” they said, stressing that the campaign was designed to carry the message even into remote corners of the district.

The initiative has generated widespread enthusiasm, with participants noting that sustained efforts of this kind could play a decisive role in building a drug-free, healthy, and secure society.
