In a strong show of protest, senior Congress leaders submitted a deputation to the DIG at the Shalbagan CRPF camp on Tuesday, condemning what they described as a “provocative and barbaric” assault on Youth Congress activists during a peaceful demonstration in Agartala the previous day.
Â
The delegation included Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Ashish Kumar Saha, CWC member and MLA Sudip Roy Barman, Pradesh Youth Congress president Neel Kamal Saha, along with several other leaders and supporters.
Â
Speaking to reporters, TPCC president Ashish Kumar Saha alleged that the incident reflected the collapse of democratic values under the current government. He stated that Youth Congress activists were peacefully protesting on important public issues when CRPF and police personnel resorted to water cannons and lathi charge. “The attack was completely provocative and intentional,” Saha said, adding that a written complaint had already been lodged at West Agartala Police Station on Monday evening.
Â
Saha further accused a senior CRPF official of instigating the assault by using derogatory language and provoking fellow personnel to attack demonstrators. He described the act as “barbaric” and claimed it damaged the CRPF’s reputation for discipline and ethics. He went on to allege that the official acted as an “Andh Bhakt” of the ruling party.
Â
The TPCC president emphasized that video footage of the incident serves as undeniable proof of the attack and expressed hope that the DIG would take appropriate action. He noted that such actions have severely tarnished the image of the CRPF in the eyes of the public, who traditionally regard the force as disciplined and ethical.
Â
Congress leaders reiterated their commitment to continue peaceful protests, asserting that attempts to suppress democratic rights through force would only strengthen their resolve.
