Supreme Court’s landmark order spurs Tripura to act on Highway Safety

In response to the Supreme Court’s historic directive on road safety, Tripura has moved swiftly to chart a plan for safer highways.

The apex court, taking suo motu cognizance of two devastating accidents in Rajasthan’s Phalodi and Telangana’s Ranga Reddy in November 2025 that claimed 34 lives, issued a landmark order on April 13, 2026. The ruling called for strict measures to eliminate illegal encroachments, unauthorized parking, and lapses in safety infrastructure across national highways and expressways.

To implement the order effectively, State Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury chaired a high-level hybrid meeting at the Secretariat’s VC Hall on Tuesday.

Senior officials from the Home, Transport, Health, PWD, Rural Development, Urban Development, Revenue, and Panchayat departments joined the session, alongside district magistrates, police superintendents, traffic police chiefs, and representatives of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).

The meeting focused on practical strategies to strengthen road safety, including stricter enforcement, improved infrastructure, and inter-departmental coordination.

Minister Chowdhury underscored the collective responsibility of all stakeholders, urging them to implement the Supreme Court’s order with precision and urgency. “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Let us work together to build a safer Tripura by adhering to the Supreme Court’s directive,” he said.

Officials discussed measures ranging from better traffic management to enhanced medical response systems for accident victims. The emphasis was on creating a comprehensive safety framework that not only prevents accidents but also ensures swift assistance when they occur.

Notably, this initiative marks a turning point in Tripura’s approach to highway safety, aligning the state with national efforts to reduce fatalities and make roads safer for all.

The Supreme Court’s intervention has set the tone for accountability, and Tripura’s proactive response signals its determination to protect lives and strengthen public confidence in road infrastructure.
