Governor Nallu calls for expansion of Generic Medicine Stores in Tripura

Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu visited the generic medicine outlet at GB Hospital on Tuesday, where he emphasized the urgent need to expand access to affordable medicines across the state.

During his inspection, the Governor highlighted the importance of introducing digital payment facilities at the hospital’s store and encouraged pharmacists and self-help groups (SHGs) to take active roles in opening more generic medicine outlets.

Speaking to reporters, Governor Nallu remarked that healthcare remains one of the biggest challenges in India, particularly for middle-class families who struggle with the high cost of medical items and drugs. He noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, special emphasis has been placed on promoting generic medicines, enabling ordinary citizens to purchase essential drugs at significantly lower prices.

Explaining the concept, Nallu said that generic medicines are identical to branded drugs in terms of active ingredients, dosage strength, safety, and clinical benefits, but are sold at a fraction of the cost. Since generic manufacturers do not repeat expensive clinical trials or spend heavily on advertising, they can pass substantial savings on to consumers.

The Governor pointed out that patients suffering from chronic conditions such as heart disease or diabetes could save Rs 5,000–Rs 10,000 per month by switching to generic medicines. However, he expressed concern that Tripura currently has only a limited number of such outlets.

He urged qualified youth, particularly those with B Pharma or related degrees, to establish generic medicine shops. Alternatively, he suggested that pharmacists could collaborate with NGOs or SHGs in villages to open outlets under their licenses, thereby generating income while ensuring wider access to affordable healthcare.

Governor Nallu also flagged shortcomings at the GB Hospital’s store, particularly the absence of electronic and online payment systems. He urged authorities to implement cashless facilities at the earliest, noting that citizens increasingly rely on digital transactions for convenience and transparency.

The Governor’s visit underscored the state’s commitment to expanding healthcare access through affordable medicines, while also encouraging entrepreneurship and community participation in the process.
