Agartala’s Ujjayanta Palace witnessed a surge of devotees on Tuesday as the historic Mangalchandi Puja was performed at the inner sanctum of the palace temple. The occasion marked the final Mangalchandi Puja of the month of Baisakh, observed on the last Tuesday of the Bengali calendar month.
Â
From early morning, worshippers thronged the temple premises, participating in rituals, prayers, and offerings. The atmosphere was filled with devotion as countless pilgrims joined in the age-old tradition.
Â
According to historical accounts, the ritual was first established by Maharani Tulsibati of Tripura’s royal family, who, guided by a divine vision, consecrated the sacred Mangalchandi idol. Since then, the puja has been celebrated every Tuesday of Baisakh within the palace grounds, continuing as a cherished legacy of Tripura’s royal heritage.
Â
For locals, the puja carries immense religious and cultural significance, drawing large gatherings year after year. The continuity of this tradition not only preserves the spiritual fabric of the community but also reinforces the palace’s role as a symbol of Tripura’s cultural identity.
