Violence erupts in Agartala's Badharghat over alleged affair

Tension gripped the Badharghat area of Agartala after a violent attack was reported at the residence of a health department employee, linked to allegations of an extramarital affair between two staff members.

According to complaints, a group of nearly 40–45 people stormed the house of Kaberi Sinha near Badharghat Stadium on Friday night, vandalizing property and assaulting residents. Several people, including Sinha, her elderly mother, and colleague Partha Choudhury, were injured in the incident.

Kaberi Sinha while speaking to the reporters alleged that the attackers were associated with a local political unit. Also, according to her, the violence unfolded in the presence of police personnel, raising serious questions about law enforcement’s role. Family members claimed that despite police deployment, attackers re-entered the house with the help of a woman officer and carried out a second round of assaults.

The dispute stems from a long-standing personal conflict over the alleged relationship between Sinha and Choudhury. Choudhury’s wife had previously lodged complaints at multiple police stations, prompting authorities to transfer both employees to different workplaces in an attempt to defuse tensions.

On Friday night, Choudhury visited Sinha’s residence. Following his wife’s complaint, police arrived at the spot. Sinha alleged she was not at home at the time and was called back using Choudhury’s phone. Upon returning, she claims she found Choudhury being beaten, and when she and her mother tried to intervene, they too were attacked.

Family members reported that at least four to five people were injured and later taken to hospital. Property damage included a car, three motorcycles, CCTV cameras, furniture, and household items. The extent of losses has yet to be officially assessed.

The incident has sparked political controversy, with allegations of involvement by local BJP leaders. However, no official statement has been issued by the party. Police have also not released a detailed account of the events, and the charges of assault, vandalism, and police inaction remain unconfirmed.

Additional forces from Arundhutinagar police station were deployed to restore order in the area. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine responsibility and the exact cause of the violence.
